Protected Designation of Origin, quality assurance

The European Union recognized the Mollar Pomegranate from Elche as Protected Designation of Origin on 26 January 2016.

Thus, it has been possible to value a fruit that is a symbol of identity of this territory and one of the star products of the area. This achievement has been possible thanks to the work that over the years the families of farmers in the area have made to preserve this native variety and to the work carried out by the Association of Producers and Traders of Pomegranates of Elche since 2008.

The Protected Designation of Origin of the Mollar Pomegranate from Elche covers 40 municipalities in the Alicante province of Vinalopó Baix, Vega Baja and L’Alacantí.

Obtaining the PDO recognizes that pomegranates of Elche have a differentiated quality and the mushy variety has unique characteristics due to the geographical area where they are produced and the experience of farmers to care for this crop and get the best fruits.

The main objectives of the Regulatory Council focus on ensuring the quality of the Mollar Pomegranate from Elche, to defend this variety and origin and implement actions and promotional campaigns to make it known and encourage consumption.
